At Vela Dental Centers Crosstown we offer treatment for TMJ (temporomandibular joint) syndrome by offering custom-made mouth guards to protect your teeth from grinding and clenching.

Following are some additional helpful tips to heal your jaw pain. If you are experiencing clicking, stiffness or pain in the jaw, ear pain or popping sounds in your ears, headaches, sore jaw muscles or locking of the jaw, or pain in your temples, you may be suffering with TMJ syndrome. This disorder is from the temporomandibular joint which connects your jaw to your skull.

In addition to wearing a night guard while you sleep, you can help relieve soreness and pain by:

–Taking anti-inflammatory over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen.
–Massaging the jaw joints, or doing gentle jaw and neck stretches.
–Eating soft foods and avoiding chewing gum!
–Reducing stress. This could involve calming techniques or cutting down on stress factors (learning to say no) as well as meditation or gentle exercise to calm the mind.
–Ice packs covered in a cloth can relieve inflammation and promote healing. Place the pack on your sore jaw for 10-15 minutes at a time.
–Sleep on your side instead of your back or stomach. Support your head using a pillow between your shoulder and your neck.
–Yawning stresses the jaw joints, so if you yawn frequently during the day, support your chin by using your fist when you yawn. This helps to prevent joint damage and keeps your jaw from locking open.
–When taking phone calls, avoid cradling the phone with your face and shoulder.
