Dental sealants are typically recommended for children whose permanent molars have erupted. Dental sealants provide a barrier between the tooth and plaque, reducing a child’s risk of tooth decay. However, if you’re over the age of 18 and have concerns about tooth decay, our team at Vela Dental Centers Crosstown suggests that you consider dental sealants.

Adults don’t always qualify for dental sealants because their teeth may already have tooth decay or dental fillings. Dental sealants can only bond to a clean, natural tooth. Otherwise, you may experience further dental issues from plaque and dental fillings becoming trapped under the sealant.

If you have no dental fillings or tooth decay, you should consult Drs. Ben Vela & Henry Arendono to learn if dental sealants would benefit you. The process of receiving a dental sealant is quick and painless.

First, Drs. Ben Vela & Henry Arendono cleans and etches the surface of the tooth to allow the dental sealant to bond to it. Then, they dabs liquid sealant onto the chewing surface of the tooth, allowing it to flow into the grooves. Finally, a special dental flashlight, known as a “curing” light, will bond the sealant to the tooth in about 30 seconds.

When the sealant is fully hardened, Drs. Ben Vela & Henry Arendono will evaluate their work to ensure the tooth is ready to be used again. If the sealant is too thick and will interfere with your bite, Drs. Ben Vela & Henry Arendono will buff off the excess. The tooth can now be cleaned and chewed upon as normal.
