Gum disease, also called gingivitis, is an infection that attacks the gums and bones that surround and support your teeth. Gum disease is caused by the buildup of plaque on your teeth, above and below the gum line. If left untreated, gingivitis can cause the loss of permanent teeth. Gum disease is usually painless, so you may not know that you have it. However, if you experience any of the following symptoms, Dr. Vela and Dr. Arredondo may treat gingivitis in Corpus Christi, Texas:
- Gums that bleed when you brush and floss
- Red, swollen, or sore gums
- Bad breath or a bad taste that will not go away
- Gums that are pulling away from the teeth
- Deep pockets forming between the teeth and gums
- Loose or drifting permanent teeth
- Changes in your bite
If you have gingivitis, our dentists may recommend that you have professional teeth cleanings more often than every six months. Our hygienist will scrape the plaque and tartar from your teeth using a small metal tool. If this is not sufficient, our dentists may perform a deep cleaning procedure called scaling and root planing. The plaque is removed from your teeth, all the way down to the roots. The tooth roots will be smoothed to make it difficult for plaque to adhere to them.
